Recently, I visited the Outer Banks in North Carolina for a wedding (you can read more on the OBX in this post). It just so happens that our AirBnB was a quarter mile from Kill Devil Hill, where the Wright Brothers invented the airplane. You might be confused, like I was, because in school they taught us that Kitty Hawk was the name of the place where man first flew.
Regardless of the name, this small clearing between thick woodlands and the coast is punctuated with a sharply rising hill which the Wrights used for their initial glider experiments. The whole area was beautifully preserved and felt like hallowed ground. It was inspiring to see the crude tools and simple workshop that produced this world-changing technology. If, like me, you love travel and still marvel at the fact that people shoot around the globe in tin cans while drinking bloody marys and watching House of Cards on their iPads, I highly recommend a visit to this place.
